The Spice Tour

It is no wonder that Zanzibar is referred to as the Spice Island !

Spices and herbs were originally introduced to Zanzibar by Portuguese traders in the 16th century, brought from their colonies in South America and India. However in the recent years, it now grown organically on a smaller scale, by individuals or community farms which host Spice Tours.

On these farms you will have a guided walk and you will learn how herbs, spices and fruits are cultivated. It is always a pleasant surprise when you get to know the actual plants that your spices in your pantry grow from.

You will get to see, smell, taste an array of Spices such as , black pepper; vanilla, cardamom, chili, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, turmeric and herbs such as lemongrass amongst others. There are also plentiful tropical fruit trees such as coconut, papaya fruit, oranges, jackfruit just to mention a few.
