What We Do

Home for the Elderly

Nandi Zanzibar is particularly close to  this cause of providing support to the elderly and to sensitize and instill in Youth sense of responsibility and continuance of the African culture of caring for the elderly which if not natured will simply die in this modern world.

Drug and Substance Abuse

There is no family in Zanzibar that does not know of someone afflicted by substance abuse with heroine ranking as the top drug of choice. NANDI Zanzibar is working with Substance abusers who are housed in Sober Houses a name given to Rehabilitation Centers in Zanzibar. It is this marginalized group that NANDI Zanzibar is passionate about.

Menstrual Hygiene Management

Zanzibar, being predominantly a Muslim Society with 99% being Muslims, issues such as Menstrual Hygiene are not spoken about due to cultural leanings. Girls’ hardships are further enhanced when poor families do not have the monetary ability to purchase sanitary towels. This occasions girls to miss school or face discomfort, ridicule or embarrassment due to mishaps occasioned by lack of sanitary towels.

Demonstration Farm

NANDI Zanzibar’s developing demonstration farm is the Centre of its operations where through training and hands on experience it will show case through permaculture practices of how communities can join hands and work towards living simply and sustainably in order to be economically empowered through the cooperative movement.

Work with Children

There is nothing as gratifying as working with children especially those placed in care. Nandi Zanzibar gives you the opportunity to volunteer at Zanzibar Children's home with which they are affliated. Most of these children are orphans, left abandoned or come from very challenging backgrounds.

A forestation Programmes

Forest cover is fast dwindling in Zanzibar, primarily because of charcoal burning. Afforestation campaigns roping in communities and stakeholders on all levels, is imperative to stop this massive destruction. Some of the Environmental and social issues facing Zanzibar are caused due to unsustainable land use, poverty and environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity and limited water harvesting systems.

WASH Campaign

Zanzibar lacks sufficient water and with dry spells throughout most of the year, it is often that there is not sufficient water in households or school or it is not easy to access it. NANDI working with schools, aims to advocate for behavioral change in sanitation. It strongly believes that by changing Youth perception, only then can these behaviors be directly translated into their homesteads and by extension to communities at large.

Cooperative movement

Using the Co-operative method, and by training women in permaculture methods of back yard farming small animal husbandry, fruit growing, vegetable /herb farming NANDI Zanzibar is opening economic opportunities for the local women. NANDI is spearheading marketing campaigns in the hospitality sector aimed at selling local produce through cooperative movement to economically uplift homesteads.
