Bungi Cultural Tour

Join NANDI Zanzibar in empowering women and Youth by taking this Tour and spending the day with us. You will be picked up by your Driver Guide who will provide a briefing enroute. The Tour is aimed at helping us with our afforestation programe and women empowerment.

Bi Khole Ruins

The Swahili word for woman is “Bi”. Bi Khole on of Sultan Said’s daughter was famed for being wealthy as she owned an estate in Bungi Area. Her palace overlooked the ocean and she lived a princess’ life in her vast estate. There is a folklore that she befriended and later beheaded young men after tiring of them and planted their heads at the bottom of the huge mango trees that line the route. Visitors can see the old courtyard and remains of the Persian baths and fountains and beautiful old architecture. The setting is peaceful and often youth in the community have picnics in this area.

Tree Planting – Increase our Community Forest Cover

You will then head for the tree nursery to see the various indigenous trees, fruits that are grown and for sale here. NANDI Zanzibar works in collaboration with this nursery in line with its mission of increasing forest cover. Guests will be a given a plant in a local school or home in order to help us realize our reforestation objectives.

School Visit

Get a chance to visit a local school to see where the children of the community learn. Here you will plant your special tree from the local nursery. You will be shown around the school and briefed about their programs. If you like, you may bring along with you pens, rubbers, balls, and such like items which you will personally hand over to the school. NANDI Zanzibar’s mission is to create a Community Library on its site and would be pleased to receive such donation of old text books and reading material.

Lunch

This is the highlight of the tour where you will visit NANDI Zanzibar’s Cookery Centre for a mouthwatering Swahili lunch prepared by local women and served by Youth who are on the job training to prepare them for the hotel industry. All food is sourced locally in order to further empower the community. There are also many artifacts on sale crafted by local women.

Our demonstration centre is work in progress and Zanzibar’s Mission is to teach and showcase what sustainable living is all about though our beautification programs, fencing, recycling and various agriculture techniques.

NANDI Zanzibar has a modest bungalow where accommodation will be offered to volunteers, Woofers and budget travelers in line with NANDI Zanzibar mission on sustainable living. Please choose to stay with us and experience firsthand what sustainable living is all about.
